Revolutionizing Neonatal Care: smallTalk Secures $2.5M NIH Grant for Groundbreaking Brain Development Solution

We are thrilled to announce that smallTalk® has successfully raised $2.5 million in funding through a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant, marking a significant milestone in our mission to improve brain development in preterm infants. As a seed-stage technology startup, smallTalk is at the forefront of addressing the critical challenges faced by nearly 400,000 infants born preterm each year in the U.S., many of whom are at heightened risk for neurodevelopmental issues. Our innovative NICU Connect System—comprising a dedicated voice recording app, the NICU Connect™ speaker designed specifically for the neonatal intensive care unit, and the Paci™ sensor—aims to bridge the gap in "infant-directed speech" that these fragile newborns desperately need for robust brain development. The Pacifier sensor communicates suck strength data, allowing nurses and therapists to help infants engage actively with recorded maternal voices during therapy sessions. Promising results from our feasibility studies have demonstrated significant improvements in speech sound processing—an essential brain measure associated with language development. With this funding, smallTalk is moving forward with a pivotal clinical trial to support our application for FDA approval.
