Oakland Unified Invests $160,500 in Innovative Whole-Child Academic Excellence Initiative

Oakland Unified School District is thrilled to announce a successful funding milestone, having raised $160,500 to further our commitment to high academic achievement and holistic child development. With a longstanding history of eliminating inequity and providing each student with excellent teachers every day, this significant investment will directly support our strategic plan launched in June 2020—a plan built on our vision that all OUSD children and educators have the opportunity to reach their highest potential, regardless of background or circumstance. In a time when challenges such as the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black and Brown communities and ongoing struggles against systemic racism have underscored the persistent need for equity, this funding empowers us to accelerate four core initiatives. The funds will bolster our efforts to ensure strong readers by the third grade, laying a solid literacy foundation for every student. In addition, we will support the development of empowered graduates by equipping them with essential post-secondary skills, creating joyful schools that foster inclusion and beauty, and growing a diverse and stable staff reflective of Oakland’s rich community tapestry. This collaborative partnership with our families and community feels more vital than ever, and every dollar raised reinforces our steadfast commitment to a vibrant, just, and inclusive education system. With these funds, we are excited to tackle the challenges head-on, transform our schools, and ensure that every child benefits from the comprehensive support they need to thrive both within and beyond the classroom.
