GEF Raises Funds to Empower Developing Countries for Global Environmental Initiatives

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is thrilled to announce that it has successfully raised $1.2 billion in funding aimed at further advancing its mission to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Founded on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the GEF has solidified its position as the largest multilateral trust fund dedicated to enabling developing countries to invest in sustainable initiatives and natural resource management. This newly raised capital will be instrumental in supporting projects that align with major international environmental conventions, including those targeting biodiversity, climate change, and land degradation. Since its inception, the GEF has funded over 4,000 Projects, contributing to a staggering $114 billion in grants and mobilizing an additional $70 billion in financing. With participation from 184 countries, various international institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector, the GEF continues to foster global partnerships essential for addressing environmental issues on a global scale. The $1.2 billion raised will be directed towards innovative projects that promote ecosystem restoration, enhance resilience to climate impacts, and address pollution management, thus enabling countries to transition towards greener economies.
