UbiQD, Inc. has secured $6,000,000 in funding from investors. The Los Alamos, NM-based advanced materials company, founded in 2014 by Dr. Hunter McDaniel, commercializes breakthroughs in quantum dot nanotechnology. UbiQD's technology, licensed from institutions including LANL, MIT, WWU, and UW, aims to power product innovations across agriculture, clean energy, and security sectors. This capital infusion marks a significant step for the company as it scales its operations and expands its market footprint.
The company differentiates itself in the quantum dot industry by focusing on a specific class of low-hazard semiconductor quantum dots, composed of CuInSeS and ZnSeS. These materials are synthesized using an extremely low-cost manufacturing process, in contrast to the typically toxic and expensive cadmium selenide or indium phosphide quantum dots that primarily serve display applications. This approach enables UbiQD to enter new markets that have previously been inaccessible due to the cost and toxicity limitations of conventional quantum dot materials. The dry Los Alamos climate supports reproducible nanomaterial production, complemented by collaborations with leading scientists from Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories.
UbiQD’s innovative position was recently recognized by New Materials News, which selected it as the #7 quantum dot company. Judges noted: “Despite its age, UbiQD has quickly established itself as one of the most interesting and innovative companies in the sector. The low price point of its low-toxicity QDs means that it is able to enter industries that have so far been off-limits.” The newly secured capital will be used to accelerate UbiQD's growth initiatives, including further research and development, scaling manufacturing capabilities, and strategic market expansion, as it continues to pursue its goal of transforming various industries with its advanced materials.
