Pleiogenix, a clinical-stage bio-pharmaceutical company, has secured $7.0 million in funding from investors. This capital infusion will support the company's mission to develop safe and effective treatments for liver and other diseases with significant unmet medical needs. Pleiogenix is initially targeting acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH), COVID-19, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) / Fibrosis, with plans to address additional diseases in the future.
The diseases Pleiogenix is addressing represent critical health challenges. AAH is a deadly liver disease with high mortality rates, while NASH is a severe form of chronic liver disease. The AAH market is estimated at $575 million by 2023, and the NASH market is projected to reach $35-40 billion by 2025. Currently, there are no approved therapeutics that prevent or treat AAH, NASH, or COVID-19. Pleiogenix's lead drug candidate, PLG888, is a Phase 2A-ready, orally available, pan-PPAR agonist. This compound is designed to increase circulating adiponectin, a hormone with anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and metabolic benefits, without causing common side effects like body weight gain or edema.
PLG888 holds the potential to address the severe inflammation and reduced adiponectin levels observed in patients with AAH, NASH, and COVID-19. By increasing adiponectin, the drug aims to decrease systemic inflammation, increase hepatic fat oxidation, and reduce hepatic fibrosis, thereby ameliorating conditions like NASH. The $7.0 million in funding will be deployed to advance the clinical development of PLG888 across its targeted indications and to support Pleiogenix's broader strategic growth initiatives. The company aims to bring the first prescription pharmaceutical to market for AAH, NASH / fibrosis, and/or COVID-19, addressing critical gaps in current treatment options and improving patient outcomes.
