M-KOPA, a UK-headquartered emerging market fintech, has secured $160.0 million in its latest funding round. The company specializes in providing affordable smartphone and e-motorbike financing, alongside smartphone-embedded digital financial services. This significant capital infusion is intended to support M-KOPA's continued expansion and its mission to enhance financial inclusion across its operational markets.
Operating in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda, M-KOPA has already extended over $2 billion in credit to more than 7 million customers. The company's innovative financing model is built on daily repayments, making essential technology and financial services accessible to millions of Every Day Earners whose income is earned daily. By leveraging rich payments data and proprietary AI-driven analytics, M-KOPA establishes a credit record for each customer, facilitating long-term financial relationships for digital loans, affordable data subscriptions, and insurance.
The newly raised capital will enable M-KOPA to further scale its operations and broaden its product offerings across its existing African markets. The company, which employs over 3,000 staff and 30,000 sales agents, has been recognized for its rapid growth and impact, including being named one of Africa’s Fastest Growing Companies by the Financial Times for four consecutive years and twice featured by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Companies globally.
This investment underscores confidence in M-KOPA's business model and its capacity to address the financial needs of underserved populations. The company plans to utilize these funds to accelerate its growth initiatives, deepen its market penetration, and continue developing innovative solutions that empower its customer base with greater financial access and opportunities.
