With a focus on three major research challenges—Cancer Science, Aging and Metabolism, and Mechanisms of Disease—the institute aims to decipher the complex pathways behind disease development and to discover innovative methods for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The funding will play a crucial role in advancing these vital research areas and accelerating the transition of discoveries from the lab to clinical applications.
Comprising approximately 400 scientists, alongside technical and administrative staff from 29 countries, IRB Barcelona has established itself as a leader in the field since its inception by the Catalan government in 2005. The institute has already made significant strides in translating research findings into practical solutions, having initiated three biotechnology spin-off companies that aim to bring scientific innovations to market. Acknowledged for its excellence in research, IRB Barcelona was designated as a "Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence" by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation in 2011 and is now a proud member of The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
