ÄIO, an Estonian deep-tech startup, has successfully secured $1.4 million in new investment. The company specializes in transforming fats and oils into sustainable, climate-positive ingredients, addressing the growing demand for environmentally responsible alternatives in various industries. This capital infusion will support ÄIO's ongoing development and expansion as it scales its innovative technology.
Founded in 2022 as a TalTech spin-off, ÄIO utilizes a proprietary precision fermentation platform. This platform employs robust yeast strains to upcycle side-streams from the wood and food industries into functional microbial oils. By leveraging local biomass and industrial residues, ÄIO offers viable alternatives to traditional palm, coconut, and animal fats, thereby reducing reliance on arable land, seasonal crops, and deforestation-prone agriculture.
The newly raised funds are earmarked to accelerate ÄIO's scaling efforts and product development initiatives. The company has already demonstrated rapid progress, moving from lab experiments to 10,000-liter pilot production in 2024, with plans to reach 100,000-liter capacity in 2025. This investment is critical for advancing these ambitious production milestones and expanding the reach of their sustainable ingredients.
ÄIO's ingredients, including Encapsulated Oil, RedOil, and ZymaLipid Complex, are designed for diverse applications across food, feed, cosmetics, and green chemistry sectors. Co-founded by Dr. Nemailla Bonturi and Prof. Petri-Jaan Lahtvee, the company is positioning itself as a leader in biotech. ÄIO aims to redefine value chains and deliver scalable, circular solutions to global challenges, with preparations underway for a Seed A investment round in Q4 2026 to further fuel its growth trajectory.
