The Group of Eight (Go8), comprising Australia’s premier research-intensive universities, is thrilled to announce the successful raising of AUD 29.1 million in funding, aimed at bolstering its mission to enhance higher education and research policy. Representing institutions renowned for their academic excellence — including the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, and the University of Sydney, among others — the Go8 is pivotal in shaping the future of university education and international research collaborations. The new funding will be directed towards developing innovative research initiatives, fostering elite international partnerships, and supporting long-term sustainable strategies within the higher education sector. This comes at a time when the demand for high-quality education is surging, with Go8 universities educating over a quarter of all university students in Australia, including an impressive cohort of 160,000 international students. Under the leadership of Professor Mark Scott AO, and Chief Executive Ms. Vicki Thomson, the Go8 is committed to maintaining its position as a leader in academic prowess, driving 70 percent of university-based research in the nation. The funding will not only facilitate cutting-edge research projects but also enhance the overall learning experience for students, ensuring that the Go8 continues to produce approximately 120,000 high-caliber graduates each year. As the Go8 Directorate continues its strategic endeavors from Canberra, this funding marks a crucial step towards reinforcing Australia’s place in the global educational and research landscape.
