Garland Surgical Ltd, a pioneering med-tech startup based in Worcester, UK, has successfully raised €2.1 million in their latest funding round, a significant boost for their innovative approach to hip replacement surgery. Founded in 2022 by British entrepreneur Simon Mifsud, in collaboration with Netherlands-based venture builder NLC and the inventive team from the University of Malta, Garland Surgical is on a mission to revolutionize the treatment of hip osteoarthritis. The funding will accelerate the development of their flagship product, the MaltaHip—a novel, tri-axial hip replacement device designed to facilitate early surgical intervention and enhance patient mobility. Unlike traditional hip replacements that often confine patients to limited movements post-surgery, the MaltaHip allows patients to engage in activities like squatting and sitting cross-legged, promoting a better quality of life. The funding will support crucial stages of product development, ensuring the MaltaHip is ready for commercial launch, while also building on the earlier €520K pre-seed funding raised from a group of notable investors, including Stepping Stone and Malta University Investment Portfolio Ltd. With test data showing an impressive wear resistance of over 50 years, the MaltaHip is poised to set a new standard in hip replacement technology. As the company moves forward, it is also gearing up for a £10 million Series A funding round planned for Q2 2025, underscoring their commitment to transforming hip replacement procedures and improving patient outcomes on a global scale.
