The Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights (LCCR) is thrilled to announce a significant funding boost that will enhance our ongoing mission to keep children out of the justice system and help them thrive in their homes and communities. While we have not raised any specific dollar amount at this time, the potential for future funding remains essential to strengthen our Children’s Defense Team in New Orleans, which already represents over 90% of the youth who encounter the juvenile justice system in the city. This funding will directly support our holistic approach to juvenile defense, allowing us to provide each child with a dedicated team of a lawyer, social worker, investigator, and youth advocate.
Our focus stretches beyond individual cases; we are committed to addressing the systemic issues that disproportionately impact poor, Black youth. With these financial resources, we aim to bolster our advocacy efforts on both state and local levels, pushing for policies that not only reduce the number of children entering the justice system but also ensure those who do are treated fairly. In Louisiana, too many children face life without parole sentences for actions taken during their youth, and we firmly believe in the capacity for change, fighting tirelessly for second chances.
As we continue our advocacy work, we remain dedicated to creating safe and supportive environments for our youth, protecting their rights, and working towards timely resolutions that allow them to return home. Together, with the community’s support, we strive to rewrite the narrative for our children and empower them for a brighter future.
