Estonian deep-tech startup ÄIO has secured $7,988,123 in investment capital from investors. The company, founded in 2022 as a TalTech spin-off, specializes in transforming fats and oils into sustainable, climate-positive ingredients. This funding round underscores growing investor confidence in circular economy solutions and the potential of advanced biotechnology to address global challenges.
ÄIO’s proprietary precision fermentation platform utilizes robust yeast strains to upcycle wood and food industry side-streams, converting them into functional microbial oils. This innovative approach allows ÄIO to offer alternatives to palm, coconut, and animal fats, reducing dependence on arable land, seasonal crops, and deforestation-prone agriculture. The company has rapidly scaled its operations, progressing from lab experiments to 10,000L pilot production in 2024, with plans for 100,000L capacity in 2025.
The newly secured capital will be instrumental in accelerating ÄIO’s growth initiatives, further scaling its production capabilities, and expanding its research and development efforts. ÄIO’s ingredients, including Encapsulated Oil, RedOil, and ZymaLipid Complex, are designed for diverse applications across food, feed, cosmetics, and green chemistry sectors. The company's co-founders are Dr. Nemailla Bonturi and Prof. Petri-Jaan Lahtvee.
This investment positions ÄIO to continue its trajectory toward becoming a prominent biotech company in Europe. By redefining value chains and delivering scalable, circular solutions, ÄIO aims to make significant contributions to global sustainability challenges, particularly in the production of fats and oils. The company is actively preparing for a Seed A investment round in Q4 2026 as it continues its expansion.
