Egyptian digital payments group e-finance has acquired Tamweely Financial Services for $95.5 million, completing a full purchase of the non-banking financial services provider. The transaction, announced on Wednesday, transfers full ownership of Tamweely to e-finance, which will integrate the company into its broader financial technology ecosystem.

Tamweely operates as a non-banking financial institution focused on microfinancing and microinsurance for small, medium, and micro enterprises across Egypt. The company uses a technology-enabled platform to deliver tailored credit and insurance products, targeting underserved business owners and individuals who lack access to traditional banking services. Its operations align with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, with a stated mission to bridge the gap between the banked and unbanked populations.

For e-finance, the acquisition expands its reach beyond digital payment infrastructure into direct lending and insurance distribution. The company, which provides electronic payment and financial inclusion services to government and private sector clients, gains a regulated lending platform and an established client base of small business borrowers. This move allows e-finance to offer a wider range of financial products through its existing digital channels, rather than relying solely on transaction processing.

The deal is expected to create operational efficiencies by combining Tamweely’s field-level credit assessment and client management capabilities with e-finance’s large-scale digital infrastructure. Tamweely’s microfinance portfolio can be serviced through e-finance’s payment networks, reducing costs and improving collection rates. Conversely, e-finance can cross-sell its payment and collection services to Tamweely’s existing borrowers, deepening engagement with a segment that has historically been costly to serve.

Post-acquisition, Tamweely will continue to operate under its current brand, with its management team remaining in place to ensure continuity for clients and staff. The combined entity will focus on scaling microfinance operations through digital onboarding and automated credit scoring, while expanding microinsurance penetration in rural and semi-urban areas. The transaction also positions e-finance to compete more directly with other non-banking financial players in Egypt, as the sector consolidates around technology-driven models.
