Downing has acquired SSE Renewables for an undisclosed amount. This corporate acquisition sees Downing take ownership of a leading developer and operator of renewable energy generation, headquartered in the UK and Ireland with a growing international presence. SSE Renewables, previously part of FTSE-listed SSE plc, is a significant force in the global energy transition, known for its extensive portfolio and ambitious development pipeline.
SSE Renewables operates approximately 4.5GW of installed onshore wind, offshore wind, and hydro generation, producing around 10TWh annually. Its secured future project pipeline stands at almost 15GW, with an additional prospective pipeline exceeding 13GW. Key projects include the 3.6GW Dogger Bank, set to be the world's largest offshore wind farm, and the 1.1GW Seagreen project. The company employs around 1,800 professionals across the UK, Ireland, Continental Europe, and Japan, bringing over 15 years of expertise in project design, financing, construction, and operations.
This acquisition represents a strategic move for Downing, significantly expanding its footprint within the critical renewable energy sector. By acquiring SSE Renewables, Downing gains immediate access to a mature operational portfolio, a robust development pipeline, and a highly experienced team. The transaction underscores a commitment to accelerating the deployment of green energy infrastructure and capitalising on the global shift towards net-zero economies.
The synergy between the two entities is expected to drive further growth and innovation. Downing's strategic direction and resources will complement SSE Renewables' proven capabilities in delivering large-scale renewable projects. This combination is poised to enhance the pace at which new renewable capacity can be brought online, leveraging SSE Renewables' established expertise in project execution and market presence.
Looking ahead, the combined entity is well-positioned to play an even more substantial role in the global renewable energy landscape. With SSE Renewables' ambitious targets to increase installed capacity to 9GW by 2027 and over 16GW by 2032, the acquisition by Downing is anticipated to provide the impetus needed to achieve these goals and contribute significantly to future energy security and decarbonisation efforts.
