Philips has acquired SpectraWAVE, Inc., a privately held medical device company based in Bedford, Mass., for an undisclosed amount. This corporate acquisition integrates SpectraWAVE's advanced coronary imaging and physiology technologies into Philips’s health technology portfolio. SpectraWAVE, founded in 2017, specializes in providing optical and computational insights to enhance the treatment and outcomes for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).

SpectraWAVE's flagship offering, the HyperVue Imaging System, combines next-generation DeepOCT images and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) with workflows optimized for cardiac catheterization labs. This system is intended for imaging coronary arteries and is indicated for patients undergoing transluminal interventional procedures. Its NIRS capability helps identify patients and plaques at increased risk of major adverse cardiac events, a critical function given that one in five CAD patients undergoing stent placement experience adverse events within two years. SpectraWAVE also developed X1-FFR, an AI-enabled, wire-free physiology solution.

This acquisition is strategically important for Philips, a global leader in health technology. By integrating SpectraWAVE's innovative imaging and physiology solutions, Philips strengthens its image-guided therapy segment, particularly in cardiology. The synergy between Philips's existing healthcare solutions and SpectraWAVE's specialized technologies is expected to provide clinicians with more precise, personalized tools for diagnosing and treating coronary artery disease.

The combined entity aims to improve clinical decision-making and patient care by offering a more comprehensive suite of solutions for interventional cardiologists. This integration is anticipated to accelerate the availability of advanced imaging and physiology guidance, contributing to better outcomes for patients affected by coronary artery disease worldwide.
