Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd. (ABFRL) has acquired Sabyasachi, India’s leading luxury house known for its heritage-driven craftsmanship and modern heirlooms. The transaction was completed for an undisclosed amount, bringing the iconic couturier’s brand under the corporate umbrella of one of the country’s largest fashion conglomerates.
Sabyasachi, founded by designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, has built a reputation as a market pioneer, being the first Indian designer label to collaborate with global names such as Estée Lauder, Christian Louboutin, and H&M. The brand operates flagship stores across major Indian cities and opened its first international flagship in New York in 2022, with a presence at Bergdorf Goodman since 2020 and a debut at Saks Beverly Hills in 2024. Its clientele spans celebrities, intellectuals, and achievers worldwide.
For ABFRL, which manages a diverse portfolio spanning ethnic wear, casual fashion, and luxury retail, the acquisition adds a high-margin, aspirational brand with deep cultural resonance. The move allows ABFRL to strengthen its position in the premium and luxury segments, where Sabyasachi’s slow-luxury positioning and global appeal offer a distinct competitive edge. The deal also provides Sabyasachi with access to ABFRL’s extensive supply chain, retail infrastructure, and operational expertise, potentially accelerating its international expansion without compromising its artisanal identity.
The acquisition is expected to create operational efficiencies in sourcing, distribution, and brand management while preserving Sabyasachi’s exclusive positioning. ABFRL’s scale could help the label navigate rising raw material costs and expand its reach in tier-one cities and overseas markets. For Sabyasachi, the partnership offers financial stability and strategic backing to scale its limited-edition collections and flagship experiences.
The combined entity will likely focus on deepening Sabyasachi’s presence in North America and the Middle East while reinforcing its dominance in India’s luxury wedding wear market. With ABFRL’s resources and Sabyasachi’s brand equity, the house is positioned to grow its global dialogue around Indian craftsmanship, though the pace of expansion will depend on maintaining the exclusivity that defines its name.
