Joby Aviation has acquired Resonant Sciences LLC for $450.0 million, a cash-and-stock transaction that brings the Dayton, Ohio-based research and development firm under the air mobility company’s umbrella. The deal, finalized this week, gives Joby full ownership of Resonant’s specialized engineering capabilities in aerospace and defense.

Resonant Sciences operates across three core domains: advanced apertures, mission systems, and signature systems and diagnostics. Its work includes designing radomes and antenna systems for air, sea, and ground platforms, as well as developing concealed communications, GPS anti-jamming, and alternative navigation technologies for contested environments. The firm also builds in-house testing and production systems for qualification and deployment. Joby Aviation, known for its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, is expanding its technology base beyond commercial passenger transport into broader defense applications.

The acquisition is strategic for Joby because Resonant’s expertise directly complements its own work on aircraft performance and survivability. Resonant’s engineers have deep experience with low-signature materials and mission-critical connectivity, which can be applied to Joby’s aircraft platforms. For Resonant, joining Joby provides access to larger-scale manufacturing resources and a broader commercial pathway for its defense-oriented products. The combined entity will retain Resonant’s Dayton operations, preserving its existing workforce and project pipeline.

Joby expects the deal to accelerate development timelines for its defense-related programs, particularly in areas where Resonant’s rapid prototyping and testing capabilities align with Joby’s certification efforts. The transaction also broadens Joby’s revenue streams, adding government and commercial contracts that Resonant already holds. No changes to Resonant’s leadership or ongoing projects have been announced.

With the acquisition complete, the two companies will begin integrating their engineering teams and shared technology roadmaps. Joby’s focus will be on leveraging Resonant’s specialized systems to enhance its aircraft’s resilience and operational range, while Resonant gains a larger platform to scale its innovations beyond current defense contracts.
