Saudi Aramco has acquired Petro Rabigh, Rabigh Refining & Petrochemical Co., for an undisclosed amount. Petro Rabigh was established in 2005 as a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical, operating a US $10 billion plant. The facility is a significant producer of petroleum-based products, with an original capacity of 18.4 million tons per annum (mtpa), and also manufactures 2.4 mtpa of ethylene and propylene-based derivatives. Its diverse product portfolio is critical for end applications like plastics, detergents, and various industrial goods.

The company further expanded with the US $9 billion Petro Rabigh II project, reaching full production by late 2017. This expansion introduced new high value-added products, some exclusive to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Petro Rabigh is also central to the Rabigh PlusTech Park, an industrial complex designed to accommodate downstream conversion industries utilizing its products as feedstock. This park aims to foster new industries and job opportunities, supported by the Rabigh Plastic Technical Center (R-PTC), managed by Sumitomo Chemical.

This acquisition marks a strategic move for Saudi Aramco to consolidate its ownership and enhance integration within its downstream operations. As a co-founder, Saudi Aramco's full ownership of Petro Rabigh allows for greater operational alignment and efficiency, leveraging the company's advanced refining and petrochemical capabilities. The move is expected to strengthen Saudi Aramco's position in producing high-value derivatives and supporting industrial growth within the region. This deeper integration aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy.

The full integration of Petro Rabigh into Saudi Aramco is anticipated to create a more unified and robust entity, poised to maximize the value chain from crude oil to specialized petrochemical products. The combined operations are expected to further stimulate downstream investment opportunities within the Rabigh PlusTech Park and contribute to the Kingdom's economic development. This purchase reinforces Saudi Aramco's downstream strategy and commitment to local industrial growth.
