The NSW Government has acquired Momentum Trains for an undisclosed amount. Momentum Trains, an international consortium comprising CAF, UGL Rail Services, Pacific Partnerships, CAF Investment Projects, and DIF Infrastructure V Coöperatief, was responsible for designing, building, financing, and maintaining the new regional rail fleet and the purpose-built Mindyarra Maintenance Centre in Dubbo. This acquisition signifies a direct corporate takeover of the consortium by the government entity.
Since February 2019, Momentum Trains has been contracted by the NSW Government to deliver the Regional Rail Project. Its mandate included replacing the ageing XPT, XPLORER, and Endeavour trains, which are up to 37 years old. The project aims to significantly improve safety, amenities, accessibility, and reliability for customers travelling across NSW regional centres, as well as to Canberra, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
This strategic acquisition positions the NSW Government to gain direct ownership and control over the critical regional rail infrastructure project. By bringing Momentum Trains' operations in-house, the government seeks to streamline project delivery, ensure long-term maintenance standards, and more closely align the rail fleet's ongoing development with public transport policy objectives. Synergies are anticipated through integrated management of the design, build, finance, and maintenance phases, potentially enhancing operational efficiency and accountability for the public.
The move is expected to ensure stability and direct oversight for the future of regional rail services. The combined entity will continue Momentum Trains' commitment to providing opportunities for regional NSW businesses, Aboriginal businesses, social enterprises, and Australian disability enterprises within the Regional Rail supply chain. This acquisition underscores the NSW Government's commitment to delivering and managing vital infrastructure for its constituents, promising improved service and sustained development for regional communities.
