Novonesis has acquired MicroBioGen, an Australian biotechnology company specializing in the industrial enhancement of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, for an undisclosed amount. The deal brings MicroBioGen’s two-decade-old proprietary platform and library of elite yeast genetics under the ownership of the global biosolutions firm, which will now integrate these assets into its existing operations.

MicroBioGen has built its reputation on improving the performance of the world’s most widely used microorganism, a yeast that underpins an estimated US$2 trillion in products across biofuels, pharmaceuticals, and food and feed applications. Its “Yeast Innovation as a Service” model has served industry leaders, most notably through a biofuels partnership with Novonesis that led to the co-development of the Innova yeast series. That prior collaboration demonstrated the practical value of MicroBioGen’s technology, which also holds potential for optimizing yeast in baking, sustainable feed, and energy production.

For Novonesis, the acquisition consolidates a relationship that had already proven commercially viable. By owning MicroBioGen’s genetic library and platform outright, the company gains direct control over a pipeline that can be applied across multiple sectors, reducing reliance on external licensing arrangements. The move is consistent with Novonesis’ broader strategy of strengthening its position in biological solutions, where yeast performance is a critical input for industrial efficiency.

The transaction is expected to accelerate the deployment of MicroBioGen’s innovations within Novonesis’ existing customer base, particularly in biofuels and food applications. The combined entity will have the capacity to scale yeast improvements more rapidly, leveraging Novonesis’ global distribution network alongside MicroBioGen’s specialized R&D capabilities. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the deal is subject to customary closing conditions.

With the acquisition complete, the focus shifts to integrating MicroBioGen’s team and technology into Novonesis’ operational framework. The immediate priority will be advancing the Innova yeast series and exploring new applications in emerging markets such as alternative proteins and sustainable chemicals. The outcome will likely hinge on how effectively Novonesis translates MicroBioGen’s research into commercially scalable products across its existing and future partnerships.
