Mercadona, a leading Spanish supermarket chain, has acquired Logifruit, a company specializing in the rental, sanitization, and storage of reusable packaging for consumer goods transport, for an undisclosed amount. This corporate acquisition sees Mercadona taking full ownership of Logifruit, integrating its specialized logistics capabilities directly into its operations.
Logifruit operates on a circular economy model, managing 18 million reusable containers through its 6R system: Racionalizar, Reducir, Rediseñar, Reutilizar, Reparar, and Reciclar. This approach aims for zero waste by recycling containers that no longer meet quality standards back into the production process. With over 1,400 employees across 14 platforms in Spain and 2 in Portugal, Logifruit serves more than 1,000 clients, providing essential services for efficient and sustainable supply chains.
The acquisition is strategically significant for Mercadona, allowing it to enhance control and efficiency within its own extensive supply network. By bringing Logifruit's expertise in sustainable packaging management in-house, Mercadona aims to further optimize its logistics, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen its commitment to circular economy principles. This move is expected to generate operational synergies, ensuring a more integrated and resilient supply chain for the retailer.
This integration is anticipated to bolster Mercadona's operational sustainability and logistical prowess. The combined entity is poised to continue driving innovation in packaging solutions and supply chain efficiency, leveraging Logifruit's established infrastructure and expertise to support Mercadona's vast retail operations and environmental objectives.
