Investment Management

Infrastructure investment firm Ancala has acquired Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) for an undisclosed amount. This transaction marks a significant corporate acquisition, transferring ownership of the airport from The Peel Group. LJLA, established in 1933, is a key regional gateway situated seven miles southeast of Liverpool City Centre, currently serving over 4.8 million passengers annually with flights to more than 60 destinations across the UK and Europe. The airport is recognized as a significant economic driver for the North West and North Wales, contributing an estimated £440 million per annum in GVA and supporting 12,000 jobs.

The acquisition by Ancala underscores the strategic value of LJLA as a critical infrastructure asset with a strong growth trajectory. LJLA has seen passenger numbers increase almost ten-fold since the mid-1990s and has recently announced 22 new services to 20 destinations. For Ancala, an infrastructure investor, this represents an opportunity to add a well-established and expanding regional airport to its portfolio, leveraging LJLA’s proven operational performance and its role as a vital transport hub.

This strategic move is expected to generate synergies through Ancala’s investment expertise supporting LJLA’s continued development and operational enhancements. LJLA has consistently focused on improving passenger facilities, with recent investments including £2.5 million and a further £4 million underway for terminal improvements. The partnership is anticipated to bolster these efforts, aiming to further enhance the customer experience and reinforce LJLA’s position as a "Faster, Easier, Friendlier" airport.

Looking forward, the combined entity is poised to continue LJLA’s growth trajectory, driving regional prosperity and maintaining its commitment to passenger satisfaction. This acquisition ensures new stewardship for the airport’s future, separate from any funding rounds, as Ancala takes full corporate control.
