Nelnet Inc. has acquired GRNE Solar for an undisclosed amount, integrating the Midwest-based solar installation company into its expanding portfolio. This transaction marks a significant step for Nelnet Inc., a diversified company with existing financial interests in the renewable energy sector, as it gains direct operational capabilities in solar project development and execution.
GRNE Solar, established in 2012, has cultivated deep roots throughout the Midwest, providing full-service solar installation for a diverse client base. The company prides itself on its comprehensive approach, utilizing in-house teams of consultants, engineers, project managers, electricians, and installers. With over two decades of collective renewable energy and green construction experience, GRNE Solar has generated over 3.7 gigawatts of power through its residential, commercial, government, agriculture, and utility-scale projects, which include ground, rooftop, and carport setups.
The acquisition is strategically aligned with Nelnet Inc.'s existing commitment to sustainable solutions, as evidenced by its tax equity financing and co-investment in CleanTech and ClimateTech initiatives. By acquiring GRNE Solar, Nelnet gains a proven operational arm, allowing it to move beyond solely financial involvement into the direct implementation of solar energy projects. This vertical integration is expected to create synergies by offering comprehensive, end-to-end solutions, from financing to installation, and to accelerate market penetration in the rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
This move solidifies Nelnet Inc.'s presence in the clean energy landscape. The combined entity is poised to leverage GRNE Solar's operational expertise and regional strength with Nelnet's strategic investment capabilities, aiming to deliver enhanced value and expanded services to customers while contributing to the broader energy transition.
