Aerovironment Inc has acquired Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) for $200.0 million. ESAero, an aerospace engineering design and manufacturing company established in 2003, specializes in the cost-effective development of innovative and advanced concepts, with a focus on electric and hybrid propulsion system development, aircraft modifications, and rapid system prototyping. The acquisition marks a significant expansion for Aerovironment within the advanced aerospace engineering sector.

ESAero has built a reputation for its work on military and commercial conceptual air vehicle designs, serving customers including multiple NASA Centers, AFRL, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin. Notably, ESAero is the Prime Contractor and Integrator of the NASA X-57 “Maxwell” all-electric airplane. Its operations include a 32,000 sq.ft. design and manufacturing facility in San Luis Obispo, CA, and an 8,000 sq.ft. integration and test location at the Oceano County Airport. The company provides design, analytical, prototyping, and testing services for systems ranging from conceptual aerospace designs to aircraft seeking supplemental type certificates.

This strategic acquisition is expected to enhance Aerovironment’s capabilities in advanced design, rapid system development, and electric propulsion technologies. ESAero’s expertise in "out-of-the-box" engineering and its proven track record in delivering customized project plans for complex aerospace challenges are anticipated to complement Aerovironment’s existing portfolio. The integration of ESAero’s specialized engineering team and its advanced design group capabilities is poised to accelerate innovation and expand Aerovironment’s offerings in critical aerospace domains.

The combination of Aerovironment’s market presence with ESAero’s deep engineering and manufacturing expertise is expected to create a more robust entity, capable of delivering cutting-edge systems solutions and optimized manufacturing practices across the aviation and aerospace industries. The combined organization aims to drive further advancements in sustainable and high-performance aerospace technologies.
