Orion has acquired Capstone Copper for an undisclosed amount, marking a significant consolidation in the global copper market. Capstone Copper is a prominent mid-tier copper producer with extensive operations across the Americas, known for its commitment to responsible production.
Capstone Copper operates a diversified portfolio of long-life assets, including the Pinto Valley mine in the United States, Cozamin in Mexico, and Mantos Blancos, Mantoverde, and the fully permitted Santo Domingo development project in Chile. With a strong team of over 8,000 employees and contractors, Capstone Copper produced 184,000 tonnes of copper in 2024, with projections for 238,000 tonnes in 2025. The company emphasizes its role in supplying clean, ethical copper critical for the world’s transition to a net-zero future, leveraging substantial measured and indicated mineral resources exceeding 11 million tonnes. The recent completion of the Mantoverde Development Project has also enhanced its production capacity and cost efficiency.
This acquisition is strategically important for Orion, as it secures a substantial and established presence in the crucial copper sector. Capstone Copper’s focus on high-growth demand for electrification, coupled with its proven operational track record and strong asset base in politically stable regions of the Americas, provides Orion with immediate scale and diversified operational capabilities. The combination is expected to create synergies through operational optimization across the expanded portfolio and a strengthened market position to capitalize on increasing global demand for essential base metals.
The integration of Capstone Copper’s assets and expertise under Orion is anticipated to form a powerful entity poised to meet growing global copper requirements. The combined operations will enhance resource security and efficiency, contributing significantly to the supply chain for electrification and renewable energy technologies. This strategic move aims to solidify the new entity’s role as a leading force in responsible copper production.
