Trimac Transportation has acquired California Freight Sales for an undisclosed amount. The deal brings the asset-based carrier and brokerage firm under Trimac’s ownership, expanding its footprint in the Western United States and adding significant warehousing and transload capabilities to its existing tank truck operations.
California Freight Sales, commonly known as Cal Freight, began as a pure brokerage operation and has since evolved into a full-service logistics provider. The company operates food-grade tankers, manages domestic and international freight shipments, and offers port and rail drayage services. Its network includes warehouse facilities in Northern California and out-of-state consignment locations with boxcar capability, totaling up to 600,000 square feet of storage space. Cal Freight also provides transload services for palletized, floor-loaded, and slip-sheeted materials, supported by 24-hour customer service.
For Trimac, a major North American bulk carrier, the acquisition is a direct move to broaden its service offering beyond traditional truckload transportation. Cal Freight’s warehousing and transload operations complement Trimac’s core tanker business, allowing the combined entity to handle freight that requires storage, transfer between rail and truck, or specialized food-grade handling. The purchase also gives Trimac a stronger presence in California’s logistics corridors and access to Cal Freight’s established carrier network for backhauls and round-trip freight across the lower 48 states.
The transaction is expected to create operational efficiencies by integrating Cal Freight’s brokerage and asset-based services with Trimac’s larger fleet and safety infrastructure.
