P&F Products & Features GmbH has acquired AVVie GmbH for an undisclosed amount. The transaction transfers ownership of AVVie’s intellectual property and development assets to P&F, which will assume responsibility for the continued advancement of the Mitral Butterfly system.
AVVie, a medical device developer, focuses on treating mitral valve regurgitation (MR), a condition affecting more than 13 million people in Europe and the US. Fewer than 5% of moderate to severely ill patients currently receive treatment. The company’s Mitral Butterfly system is a hemi valve designed to replace the function of the native, dysfunctional posterior leaflet. It uses a nitinol-based frame and a pericardial membrane to restore full coaptation by sliding over the diseased leaflet while preserving the motion and function of the anterior leaflet. The device aims to prevent unphysiological inflow caused by diverse pathophysiologic origins, such as degenerative and functional MR, and to minimize outflow obstruction. Delivery is possible via both minimally invasive surgery and transseptal delivery.
P&F Products & Features GmbH, the acquiring entity, brings manufacturing and product development capabilities to the table. The acquisition allows P&F to integrate the Mitral Butterfly into its existing operational framework, leveraging its engineering resources to advance the device through further development stages. For AVVie, the deal provides access to P&F’s infrastructure, which is expected to accelerate the path toward clinical application.
The strategic rationale centers on combining AVVie’s specialized cardiovascular technology with P&F’s expertise in bringing complex medical products to market. The Mitral Butterfly addresses a significant unmet need in a patient population with limited therapeutic options, and the acquisition positions the combined entity to focus on refining the device’s design and preparing for regulatory processes.
The combined organization will now direct its efforts toward completing the development milestones for the Mitral Butterfly, with the goal of eventually offering a new treatment option for MR patients.
