Duolingo has acquired Animade, a London-based animation and design studio, for an undisclosed amount. The deal brings the creative team behind Animade’s character-driven work into the language-learning platform’s fold, marking the first acquisition of its kind for Duolingo.

Animade, founded in 2010, specializes in crafting animations and digital experiences with a strong emphasis on personality and narrative. The studio has built a reputation for helping brands differentiate themselves through warm, character-led storytelling, often adding a human touch to otherwise functional interfaces. Duolingo, known for its mascot Duo the owl and its playful approach to education, has long relied on similar visual charm to keep learners engaged.

The acquisition is strategic for Duolingo as it seeks to deepen its in-house creative capabilities. Rather than outsourcing animation work, the company will now have direct access to a team that has spent over a decade refining character-based design. For Animade, joining Duolingo offers a stable home and a larger platform for its craft, while allowing the studio to continue operating with its existing team and ethos.

Duolingo expects the integration to accelerate the production of animated content across its app, from lesson illustrations to marketing campaigns. The combined entity will likely see faster iteration on new features that rely on visual storytelling, a core part of Duolingo’s user experience. Animade’s portfolio of past clients will not be a focus going forward, as the studio’s resources shift toward Duolingo’s product roadmap.

The acquisition closes a chapter for Animade as an independent studio but opens a new one under Duolingo’s ownership. The team will remain in London, and no immediate changes to staffing or leadership have been announced. Over the coming months, the first joint projects are expected to surface within Duolingo’s existing courses, offering a tangible test of how well the two creative cultures align.
